Quick Takes #19

1. I had my surgery consult yesterday. I wasn't too happy to hear the words "fuse bone" in relation to my spine. The surgery would take 2-4 hours, with only 1 or 2 days in the hospital. I would have 6 weeks of recovery, during which I would need to avoid any lifting or bending etc. Hubby and I are not sure what the next step is, but I'll probably have to have the surgery at some point no matter what other steps we take between now and then. Praying for guidance.

2. Hubby and I turned off our cable. As it is I haven't really watched anything in ages because I've always been in class or doing homework. We aren't completely crazy though. We have Netflix which will give me the chance to watch all the shows and movies I've been missing when I have the time. Plus, we'll be saving around $70 a month. Can't complain about that.

3. Summer classes start on Monday. My MIL arrives that day too. Between my MIL visiting and my sister's graduation I am going to have a crazy first few weeks of classes.

4. Squish climbed into her crib today. She wasn't too happy about it once she was in there, but she wouldn't climb out.

5. I would like my normal life back. One that doesn't include so many medications and doctors. Without all of the pain and worry.

6. I am so glad today is Friday. I love burger and movie night. Looking forward to it. Now I just have to figure out what the movie is going to be tonight. I think we'll watch The Neverending Story or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but I haven't asked Hubby or the kids what they think.

7. I love the bit of peace I get in the afternoon. It's been nice to enjoy a coffee or tea, eat a small snack, knit, and read or watch whatever I want. Once classes start I'll have to use that time to study and such, but I'm hoping to keep knitting while I study. What do you do when you have time for yourself?

  1. I'm really enjoying being cable free, too. Do you have a little antenna (and DTV converter if your TV is old)? We can still get half a dozen channels with those, so it's not like we're completely television-less.

I would like to say when I have time for myself I do things such as read good books or sew, but usually I just sneak onto the internet to read blogs!

  2. We don't have an antenna yet. We're going to see how much we miss those channels and then if we need to we'll get one. Since we can stream Netflix through our xbox360 there are plenty of movies and seasons of tv shows to watch. Plus, almost everything we watched that we can't get from Netflix we can watch through the tv network's website.

  3. Good for you...about the cable! My hubby is a TV-aholic. It's sort of an ongoing battle between us, but I think one needs to pick their battles too.

He works hard...two jobs so that I can be home with the kids. Plus one of those jobs is at the Fire Station where depending on which station they assign him to, may or may not have cable...meaning TV.

So, like I said, I try not to make too much of a big deal about this with him. While I wish he would watch less, it doesn't mean that I have to watch and we usually don't have the TV on during the day (kids and me).

I'm hoping to lead by example.

  4. Free time? Well, when I do have it, I love to steal away with a good fictional novel. Sometimes a girl's just gotta escape into another world!

I will pray for discernment as so when/if you should schedule the surgery. I'll throw in one too that perhaps you could be healed without it! :-)

  5. I love Netflix! I recently got my Mom hooked on it as well, and she's loving the applications for homeschooling. I don't think I could go completely cableless, but I am trying to see what shows I should probably remove from my lineup.
